Concept and filming: 27th March

On the 27th Match we shot and filmed part of our film.

The concept of our film is a girl, living in the working class subculture and discovering the city. We wanted to capture the mundane atmosphere and so filmed on dull and overcast days. By the end of the film, the girl ends up in Leadmill. She discovers her escape through music and dance and the vibrancy of what we believe to be the modern Northern Soul.

We first filmed in my flat, it's quite dark so added to the atmosphere. We used my vinyl player to nod to the hype around records at the time. We featured Yorkshire tea which is an important part of Sheffielders culture.

The film was based around Fred Perry mod clothing so wanted to feature the mod scene too. We filmed around the trams as they are a big part of the city and included local artists such as Pete McKee and Tom J newell.

We discovered Sheffield as we were finding spots to film. Kelham Island and Division street were one of the most interesting. Division Street had a Northern Soul sign next to a pub which was like a gold mine for our film! We loved that Sheffield still had hidden gems of classic Northern Soul running throughout the city. This is where we shot the smoking scene and a few photos. The green contrasted nicely with the neutral colours but wasn't too bright to take away from the working class like aesthetic.

We filmed walking on the tramlines featuring Park Hill flats which epitomises the working class in Sheffield. We wanted to capture mundane shots of the girl and highlight what an everyday looked like for a Working Class girl. We showcased more lifestyle rather than the actual dancing on film day as this was our interpretation of Northern Soul. We highlighted the Mod scene and the music included. We are thinking about using a track from The Who or The Kinks as these were the most popular bands at this time and will solidify our concept.

We filmed for 7 and a half hours and got around 5 minutes of footage. It was a lengthy process but in editing we managed to find the bits that worked and those that didn't fit.

In a week or so we are continuing filming. We are filming around the fish and chip shop on Division Street as this is a proper Northern meal. We will be filming in a oldish pub too to show the working class lifestyle and hopefully Leadmill as well to finish off our film.
