Promotional Materials/ Proposed Exhibition

Image
Exhibition at The Leadmill These are the promotional posters I would post outside The Leamdill venue to promote the exhibition. I wanted the imagery of the concept to be a big part of these posters and I believe this conveys the Northern Mod feeling the most. I included captions such as "£1 pints" to engage people and encourage them to attend. I want this to be a celebration so naturally it would be at The Leadmill due to the couple meeting outside of here at the end of the film. I would show the film inside the venue on a few nights, beers and food would be served and it would be everyone coming together to celebrate na due proud of where they are from. The film would be projected onto the back wall. Tickets would be sold on The Leadmill website and be advertised via their social channels.  This is a promotional beer mug that beer will be served in at the venue upon arrival. These will also be available to buy at the venue for £9.99. The design re...

Concept Manual Draft

Image
These are a few screenshot from the current concept manual. This is the first draft that I'm currently working on. First image is from the from cover, second image is one from my location based pages and the third is the styling close ups and notes. I want this to be mostly imaged based and a visual representation of our concept and interpretation of Northern Soul. I will be working on this over the next few weeks.

GIF

GIF This is the animated gif created by myself and Macy. We wanted it to represent the film and the shoot and have an up north kind of feel. We liked this shot but it we used other shots in our film instead. We wanted to still get the grittiness of the north too and thought this was a good way to represent this.

Final Image

Image
Final Image: We chose this as our final image for hand-in and for the exhibition at Kommune. After printing off the potential options we found this worked the best with our concept and had the strongest elements in correlation to the brief. The image has layers from the front to back and contrasts nicely with the background. Park Hill is an iconic spot in Sheffield, it was featured in our film and is highly recognised in the city of Sheffield. We were happy with the styling as it features Fred Perry and a focal point and we managed to get a lot of different styling pieces in the shot. All the elements of the photo work well together and we liked the shot, poses of the models and aesthetic of the whole piece in regards to our concept. The edits on the photo were minimal but I increased the contrast, and lowered the shadows to make the two people stand out. I was thinking about adding grain to the image but thought this looked more raw and would stand out more as its going to be ...

Final Image potential

Image
It took us a while to decide on the final image. I decided to do a few A3 prints of the narrowed down choices to see if this would solidify a choice. Below are the images in question and reasoning for the final image. Divison Street Image :  A strong Northern inspired Image. I liked the difference in model positions and the Northern Soul sign with the rough walls gives the rough/ up North feel we wanted.   The Leadmill Image: A strong image that fits the brief and the end of the film. Using this iconic Nightclub as a backdrop gave the image a real Sheffield feel. Relates to the film as the couple meet at the end.   Parkhill Image:  Strong poses and a nice contrast with the bright colours of Parkhill and the graffiti on the walls. Models could have been more in focus in the photo to make this a stronger image.  Parkhill Steps Image:  Very strong styling Image, managed to capture all the garments of both models in thi...

Music and Title Selection

Image
The music selection was one of the more diffuclt things we had to choose. We wanted it to be Northern based singer/band to fit the style of the film. I listen to a lot of Ska and Mod classics anyway so tried the music I knew and see if it would fit the film but none fit with the style we were going for. I tried Northern Soul Playlists but these didn't work either. Macy suggested we try 'Love will tear us apart' by Joy Division. Being a band from Salford but still relevant and massively listened to today, this worked with our film. They fit into the current mod/Indie scene but it is a well-known song that people can relate to which is what we wanted. We tried this with the film and it worked perfectly. I edited the film slightly so the cuts land on the beat on the song and fitted it into the concept! Film Name:  We couldn't think of a name for a film but kept hearing the term 'Up the North' whether it be when I'm in Leadmill or Sheff...

Editing the Final Film

After gathering all the footage, we have 3 weeks off in which we are editing the film. Me and Macy decided were going to send each other our versions of the film edited until we find a common ground, pick our favourite bits, meet up and finish the final edit. Currently I am editing the final film. I've added a 35mm grain filter to give it that mundane, northern, washed colour look which fits the brief. I am putting the footage together, clips between myself and Jacob in the same location and flipped between shots. I started the film in parkill to hint at them living in the same building. I finished the film with shots of them walking from opposite sides of the street and meet at the entrance of Leadmill. I want to keep the film quite simple, real-life like and not too heavily edited with effects of transitions and I find the concept works better with simple editing with quicker cuts. I've added a few transitions but nothing major or too noticeable and a fade out after the L...

Easter Holidays

Over the Easter holidays we both worked on different parts of the film. I had also started editing the photo we chosen for the final image. During the holidays, myself and Macy sent each other our own versions of the film and picked the best bits out of each. We looked at the edits and how to put the film together with the music so it flows and hits on the beat. I've also started working on my concept manual. I'm currently looking at the locations and imagery used and how this can work together. I'm trying to get something on every page and then perfecting it little by little until I'm happy with it. I have completed my mood boards. I'm looking into different way of editing the final image we chose at park hill. I wanted it to still have the up north and working class feel, even though this is quite a bright picture with the blue sky and bright background. I have took advice from Talia who came in to work with us and working on which ways are best to edit the ...

Visual Display Mood Board

Image
Visual Display: The Display of this module I wanted to keep relevances ant to the film and aesthetic. A very up north kind of feel. Displayed in a club, with live music and played on a projector. Neon lights as this is reoccurring theme in bars and clubs of Sheffield. A fun and 'with your mates' kind of feel. Cheap pints served and an overall celebration of Sheffield with a gathering of Northerners was the kind of feel I wanted to go for. The mood board highlights these aspects as youthful, care-free attitude is shown.

Models Mood Board

Image
Models Mood Board: This mood board highlights the aesethic intended for the models used during the film. The male character looks quite rough around the edges, modern and the look as if he's from a band. Modern and photography references used to show different perspectives but one overall look. A mod feel to the look. The female character looks white tough too, working class but natural and the characters work well together. Both models have nose piercings and tattoos to give them an edgy aesthetic.

Northern Soul Mood Board

Image
Northern Soul Mood Board: I wanted to show a different side of Northern Soul in this mood board, more mod and modern but still  giving hints of its roots. I used images from Tom Wood Photography to show the mundane British living but what makes us proud to be Northern. I wanted to capture Northern Soul in the sense of enjoyment, including Mod dressing being a big part of Sheffield today, music influences that we still listen to today (The kinks) and a working class culture that is a huge part of the pride of Northeners. This is a different take on classic dancing and soul clubs but fits with our concept of the City, the fashion and Working Class living.

Concept Mood Board

Image
Concept Mood Board: The concept is based on two people, discovering the city and finding escape at The Leadmill at the end of the film through a common interest in music taste. The mood board has references of different locations but focuses on Sheffield as a city itself. References come from popular places such as the vinyl shops, park hill which is one of the most well-known places and of course, The Leadmill. The model references embody the characters in the film with their style and aesthetic. The mood board mainly focuses on the characters and the location in Sheffield.

Styling Mood Board

Image
Styling Mood Board: This mood board has a range of references indicating the styling and whole look we were going for in the film. Focusing mainly on Fred Perry, references of the classic polo and modern takes are scattered throughout the board. Being a mod based concept, it was crucial for us to have the classic defining piece on mod fashion that is still worn today. Worn with trousers and more laid back pieces such as jeans. Close up styling images shows tattoos as I wanted to incorporate a tougher, edgier look too styling. Laid back styling on the male references. Female styling is polo shirt based and shows a modern take on how the Fred Perry polo would be styled today. All references have a northern styling feel.

Photography Mood Board

Image
Photography Mood Board: A lot of British based photographers were used here that capture the mundane living of Northern and the culture. I used references from Daria Kobayashi Ritch, A New York based photographer but a very British shoot in the Elle Campaign, the use of colours, angles and location was inspiring and sparked ideas for the module. Photos from 1980's photographer Tom Wood was used (Girl on bus) as a British photographer, he captures the everyday. Holly Falcon photography was used for the use of people against the contracting colours, buildings and overall Northern vibe of the shoot. All these photographers focus on the people, the mood board reflects a Northern feel with this type of photography and seems to highlight the working class, everyday people you see walking the streets of Sheffield. The angles, focuses and photography was very inspiring as you will see from our own shoots.

Makeup and Hair Mood Board

Image
Makeup and Hair Mood Board: The male models references show a messy mod look. The main front image with the beard (Miles Kane) was the aesthetic I wanted to look towards for the film. It's modern and relatable yet has a tougher edge and still fits the brief with his Northern look. The female references show a cool girl, edgy and Northern style. The main model references (Taylor Lashae) shows the mod haircut, short bob with a fringe and slightly messy. The makeup on the references are simple and we took it a bit more mod with a winged liner look. We didn't want a really bold look as it wouldn't fit the Northern, undone look we were going for. A nude lip and light foundation references was taken from the mood boards. Both models look mod but fit with modern day in Sheffield today.

Styling the models

Image
Styling the male model  I wanted to take a modern approach on the mod look. A T shirt and jeans is the basics and staples for any mod look. Fred Perry was a must for the centre of our styling due to the association through the years and subcultures of Mods, rockers and skinheads. We chose a ringer tee for the laid back mod style. We look at a more thrown on look for the male model, roll up jeans to add an edge and a corduroy jacket to finish off the look. Adidas trainers are very common in modern mod styling. Inspiration for the trainers came from Pete Mckee's Adidas illustration, he made it known this was a very Sheffield up north look and that's the feel we wanted to give from our styling. Adidas style trainers were commonly seen in the mod era. Styling the female model Female model: We took inspiration from both the classic northern soul styling and the modern mod scene that you see in Sheffield today. We created a look again based around Fre...

Looking at footage from filming

Image
We wanted to still keep the original footage of myself in the film as we had some good shots but felt that the overall concept was not as strong as intended. We decided to use the idea of a hint of romance in the film but a mimicking concept to make it fit the brief. The two northerners discover the city and find escape through a popular night club (Leadmill) at the end of the film. We filmed Jacob on the tram going the opposite way, walking into the vinyl shop, walking through park hill and in and out the fish shop. We wanted them to have common interests and a common sense of mundane living and find each other as the end of the film. We spent the day filming Jacob and Macy photographed us in different location in Sheffield as we wanted the photos to match the film. The original photos taken were just of myself but did not fit the current concept. We spent the whole day filming and looked back at the footage and fitted this in to fit our new concept brief we had ca...
