Sheffield: A Vibrant City

Walking through Sheffield and living here for a few years means you get to know the city. Being a fan of the North and living here all my life, you get to know the quirks of the city, the atmosphere and the people. Noticing things during research of this project was the modern day approach to Northern Soul. Personally, I believe Northern Soul is a celebration of the North, the music, culture, working class and Yorkshire Tea. It's a togetherness, local art, local pubs and clubs and things that make you feel at home. Sheffield captures this in so many different ways. The working mens clubs, local street art, coffee shops, hidden vinyl shops, vintage and everything music based. We celebrate the steel works, Arctic Monkeys and the hard working culture we have, so we can enjoy the weekend and dance to our favourite songs. The working class has struggled to be portrayed in a positive light and this changed when Northern Soul was introduced. The bleak and boring days turned into vibrant evenings of dance, music and excitement. The gigs, the fashion, the culture and the atmosphere was brand new, exciting and something the Working Class could share. Even today we see it injected into Sheffield. We are able to feel free, and hold a sense of togetherness and shared love for dance, music and culture. Through it's fashion, shops, beauty and buzzing atmosphere, Northern Soul has affected the way the working class live.

-Millennium Gallery captures the history of Sheffield whilst bringing and homely modern approach with the peace gardens and independent card and novelty shops, cafes and ever changing exhibitions.

-Kelham Island is a new industrial mini town, showcasing old northern soul music with hidden gem vinyl shops, Sheffield Based Artwork and street food events. It captures all the best bits of Sheffield and brings a 'hip' and upcoming vibe to the city.

-Tramlines is of course one of the most well-known inner city festivals in the UK, celebrating Sheffield talents and more

-Many Vintage Shops including Vulgar, Mooch, Sid and Mallory and Cow represent the style and love for pre-loved clothing in Sheffield. We're hoping to take a look in these to see if we can find any Mod style authentic clothing.

-Sheffield Celebrates art through street art and independent cafes. Illustrator Tom Newell has artwork regulars throughout the main spots in Sheffield, based on music and sheffield history, these can be spotted in Steam Yard and Tramlines. Pete McKee is also seen throughout the streets of Sheffield.

-Working Mens Clubs have always been a big part of Sheffield, from High Green to the City Centre they are the spot for working class culture in Sheffield.

-Parkhill is one of the most well-known buildings in Sheffield. It's lived through history. It's been the place for the working class to live and had recently had a overhaul. It's been known for being one of the less desirable places in Sheffield but the people live there, love it. They fought to keep these flats up and running and are proud to live there. Being built in the 1950's its amazing to still be here and an iconic building in Sheffield's History.

-Division Street is an upcoming street in Sheffield that still has nods to history. it has anything from pubs, independent  flower shops, coffee shops, small businesses and plenty of vintage shops. It's a place well-loved in Sheffield.

-The Leadmill was formally part of building that housed the legendary Esquire Club, showcasing bands such as The Who and Small Faces, after a decline in Youth Employment and 'Thatcherism', Leadmill was formed by a group of unemployed youths who all shared a love for music and Talent. Today, Leadmill is one of the most notorious nightclubs in Sheffield. The longest standing live venue and proud to have hosted huge Northern Acts such as The Stone Roses, Oasis and of course Arctic Monkeys. Leadmill still celebrates everything Northern and Working Class. With a nod to the classic northern soul music, Leadmill has a room dedicated to Northern Soul, RnB and Motown hits.
